Naturopathic Doctor Helps Patients Become Healthier, Not Just Mask Symptoms
Long Island Naturopathic doctor James Prego sees patients with chronic illnesses and allows them to become healthier as a whole - without simply treating the symptoms of the illness.
ISLIP, NY, November 08, 2008 /Health and Fitness News Articles/ -- When something is wrong with our bodies, we usually go to a doctor. When we have a chronic condition such as asthma or irritable bowel syndrome, we tend to treat the symptoms rather than discovering what caused the problems.
However, Dr. James Prego, Naturopathic Doctor, gets people involved in their own healing process to increase their health, not just eliminate the diseases.
Why a Naturopathic Doctor?
A naturopathic doctor (ND) is a primary care, general practitioner trained as an expert in natural medicine. NDs are the only primary care doctors clinically trained in the use of a wide variety of natural therapeutics. Patients consult with NDs for preventive medicine as well as for almost all acute and chronic conditions.
"Most of my patients come to me," said Dr. Prego, "because they either have a chronic condition they have been treating with medication, or they have a chronic condition they cannot treat with medication."
Though the majority of Dr. Prego's patients are women ages 25 - 65, he said that he has seen a good number of men moving toward naturopathic medicine to deal with prostate issues, type-2 diabetes, hypertension, digestive problems, etc.
"Naturopathic doctors attempt to find the underlying cause of the patient's condition and promote wellness in body and mind, rather than focus solely on symptomatic treatment," said Dr. Prego.
An ND attends a four-year, fully accredited medical school and is educated in all of the same basic and clinical sciences as other medical doctors and also studies many alternative medical modalities, such as clinical nutrition, homeopathy, botanical medicine, hydrotherapy and counseling. Additionally, an ND takes rigorous professional basic science and clinical board exams so that he or she may be licensed by a state or jurisdiction as a primary care general practice physician.
Long Island Naturopathic
In addition to Long Island Naturopathic, Dr. Prego teaches at Touro College in New York and has recently completed a two-year stint as adjunct professor at Molloy College.
"When I learned about naturopathic medicine I was amazed that I could be a doctor and get people not only illness-free, but focus on improving their health, and using natural means," Dr. Prego said.
When Dr. Prego sees a new patient for the first time, he establishes a two-part intake appointment. In the first appointment, he takes your medical history, including the medications you take and collects information about you.
After that appointment, Dr. Prego makes a detailed plan of action for each individual patient. "I take the first week after the initial appointment to write out and type a plan based on what the patient tells me he or she wants to address."
When the patient returns a week later, Dr. Prego discusses the proposed plan of action with the patient and then can tailor each plan to the individual's requests or needs. Upon the conclusion of the second appointment, the patient leaves Long Island Naturopathic with the agreed-upon plan in hand.
The follow-up visits occur at the patient's request, and Dr. Prego is available both via email and telephone if patients have any short questions.
